Philosopher's Path, Kyoto: A Slow Walk Made Better Without Bags
Updated: 19 hours ago
The Philosopher's Path is a quiet stone path that follows a canal in northeast Kyoto. It runs about two kilometers between Ginkaku-ji and Nanzen-ji, past small temples, cafes and shaded benches.
It is a path for slow walking and for stopping often, which is why it is best done without luggage.
What to See
Start at Ginkaku-ji, the Silver Pavilion. Walk south along the canal toward Honen-in, Eikan-do and finally Nanzen-ji with its brick aqueduct. Small shops and cafes appear along the way.
Best Seasons
Cherry blossom season turns the canal into a pink tunnel. Autumn colors at Eikan-do are famous. Early mornings are quiet in any season.
Why Go Bag-Free
The path is narrow in places, and a suitcase blocks other walkers. A light day pack makes it comfortable to stop at benches and cafes.
How Long It Takes
The walk itself takes about 30 minutes, but most visitors spend two to three hours with temple stops.
Getting There
Take a city bus to Ginkaku-ji-michi, or the subway to Keage Station for the southern end.
Send Your Bags Ahead
If you are changing hotels the same day, let KOMATSU carry your luggage. KOMATSU offers same-day luggage delivery in Kyoto from 900 yen per bag, with no prepayment. Pickups run from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM, seven days a week.
Walking the Path in Order
Most visitors walk from north to south, starting at Ginkaku-ji and ending near Nanzen-ji. The route follows a small canal lined with cherry trees, and you will pass small bridges, cafes and quiet side paths. Take your time, and use the benches.
Stops Worth Making
Honen-in sits just off the path and is known for its calm moss garden. Eikan-do is famed for its autumn colors, and Nanzen-ji has a large gate and a brick aqueduct. Allow time at each rather than rushing to the next.
Food and Rest
Small cafes and tea shops line the route. A pause for green tea and a sweet is part of the experience. Bring a little cash for small shops.
Best Time of Day
Early morning and late afternoon are the quietest. The light is soft and the canal reflects the trees.
A Bag-Free Finish
At the end of your walk, your luggage can already be at your hotel. KOMATSU delivers the same day from 900 yen per bag, with the fifth bag free, and staff confirm all the details with you first.
Combine It With Other Sights
The path links easily with Ginkaku-ji, Nanzen-ji and the museums of Okazaki. A relaxed order is Ginkaku-ji first, then the canal walk, then lunch near Nanzen-ji. Finish with a short bus or subway ride back to the center of the city.
