Packing Tips for a Week in Kyoto
Updated: Oct 22
A week in Kyoto means walking, a lot of stairs, temple shoe removals and changing weather. The best packing list is a short one.
These tips help you pack smart so your suitcase never becomes the main character of your trip.
Pack for Walking
Kyoto is a walking city. Bring two pairs of comfortable shoes that are easy to slip on and off, since you will remove them at temples and restaurants. Clean socks without holes are a small but real courtesy.
Dress in Layers
Spring and autumn mornings are cool and afternoons are warm. Summer is hot and humid, and winter is crisp. A light jacket, a scarf and breathable layers work in almost every season.
Bring Less, Wash Once
Plan for one laundry stop during the week. Five outfits that mix and match are enough. Coin laundries are easy to find, and a single wash lets you pack much lighter.
Keep Valuables Close
Carry your passport, cash, phone, chargers and medication in a small day bag. Send the rest ahead. KOMATSU does not accept valuables over 50,000 yen, cash or ID documents, so keep those with you.
Leave Room for Souvenirs
Kyoto is full of ceramics, tea and textiles. Leave a quarter of your bag empty, or plan to send purchases to your hotel. KOMATSU offers same-day luggage delivery in Kyoto from 900 yen per bag, with no prepayment. Pickups run from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM, seven days a week.
Pack One Day Bag, Send the Rest
Think of your trip in two layers. The day bag holds what you need today: water, phone, charger, a light layer, your wallet and your passport. The main bag holds everything else, and it can travel on its own.
Shoes, Socks and Temples
Many temples, ryokan and restaurants ask you to remove your shoes. Wear socks you are happy to show, and choose shoes that slip on and off easily. A small foldable bag for your shoes is handy at some venues.
What to Leave at Home
Leave bulky towels, large umbrellas and extra shoes behind. Hotels in Japan usually provide towels and basic toiletries, and a compact umbrella is easy to buy if rain arrives.
Sending Your Bag Ahead
When you change hotels, book same-day delivery so the main bag arrives before you do. KOMATSU takes suitcases, backpacks, sealed boxes and more. Valuables over 50,000 yen, cash and ID documents should stay with you.
A Quick Packing Checklist
Day bag: passport, wallet, phone, charger, medication and water. Main bag: clothes for four or five days, a light jacket, comfortable shoes and a compact umbrella. Souvenirs: leave a quarter of the bag empty, or send purchases ahead to your next hotel. A short list keeps the bag light and the days flexible.
