Kyoto's autumn leaves are late this year

If you're planning to see Kyoto's maples in 2026, aim for late November. A warm autumn has slowed the color change, and forecasters now expect Arashiyama to reach its best around November 24, a little later than usual.

The golden ginkgo trees are expected to peak in Kyoto around November 27. That makes the last week of November and the first days of December the sweet spot for both red and yellow.

Quick planning tip: Forecasts are updated through the season, so check again a week before your trip. Higher, cooler spots like Kurama and Ohara usually turn first, while temples in the city center follow later.

5 illuminations and special openings for 2026

Daytime temples get crowded in peak season, but many open again after dark with the leaves lit up. These are confirmed for 2026:

  • Kyoto Botanical Gardens "Night Garden of Autumn Colors": Nov 14 – Dec 13, 18:00–21:30 (last entry 20:30). Maples reflected in the water, right next to Kitayama Station. Adults 1,100 yen on weekdays, 1,500 yen on weekends.

  • Kodai-ji Temple: Oct 23 – Dec 13, from 17:00. A short walk from Kiyomizu-dera, with lit leaves mirrored in the pond.

  • Shozan Garden: Oct 31 – Dec 6. A quieter garden in northern Kyoto.

  • Myokaku-ji Temple (Hoshi-en garden): night viewing Nov 21 – Dec 6. A lesser-known garden away from the main routes.

  • Komyo-ji Temple (Nagaokakyo): special opening Nov 14 – Dec 6, famous for its maple-covered approach.

How to beat the autumn crowds

  • Go early or go late. Arrive at popular temples right at opening, or save the evening for illuminations.

  • Pick a weekday. Weekends draw far bigger crowds at Kiyomizu-dera and Arashiyama.

  • Reserve where you can. Some temples offer timed or early-entry viewings that must be booked ahead.

  • Use trains and the subway. City buses get packed in autumn.

  • Leave your suitcase behind. Large bags on crowded buses are a headache for everyone, and the city asks travelers not to bring them on board.

Prefer someone else to handle the timing?

One more thing to budget for: since March 2026, Kyoto's accommodation tax ranges from 200 yen to 10,000 yen per person per night, depending on the room rate.
