How to Get From Kyoto Station to Your Hotel Without Carrying Bags
Updated: Oct 22
Arriving at Kyoto Station by Shinkansen from Tokyo or by train from Kansai International Airport is an exciting moment. Walking out of the station into the wide plaza, with Kyoto Tower above you and the city ahead, is the beginning of the trip.
Doing that walk while dragging a suitcase is considerably less exciting. Here is how to get your bags from Kyoto Station to your hotel without carrying them yourself.
Option 1: Take a Taxi
A taxi from Kyoto Station to most central hotels costs between 800 and 2,000 yen depending on distance. For a single traveler with a lot of luggage, this is often the most practical option on arrival day. Taxis queue outside both the north (Karasuma) and south (Hachijo-guchi) exits.
The limitation: you still have to manage your bags through the taxi, into the hotel lobby, and through check-in. If your hotel does not offer early check-in and you arrive at 9:00 AM, you will be leaving your bags at the front desk and navigating the rest of your morning without them anyway.
Option 2: Use the Subway or Bus
Kyoto's Karasuma Subway Line connects Kyoto Station to central and northern Kyoto. City buses cover nearly everywhere the subway does not. Both are inexpensive and frequent.
Neither is well-suited to large suitcases during busy hours. The subway cars are not wide, and standing with rolling luggage during morning rush hour draws visible friction from other passengers. Buses have limited floor space and steps at the entrance that make suitcases awkward.
Option 3: Luggage Delivery to Your Hotel
The cleanest solution is to have your bags delivered directly to your hotel while you travel light. KOMATSU offers same-day luggage delivery in Kyoto: arrange for your bags to be collected at Kyoto Station or your previous accommodation, and they will be waiting at your hotel by the time you check in.
This approach works especially well for travelers who want to use their arrival morning to explore rather than navigate. Hand off the bags, take the subway or bus to Gion, spend the morning walking, and arrive at your hotel in the early afternoon to find everything already there.
Same-day delivery from 900 yen per bag. Pickups available from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM.
Option 4: Luggage Storage at Kyoto Station
If you are not moving accommodations but simply want a few free hours after arrival, Kyoto Station's coin lockers are a practical option for a half-day. The limitation is the same as with taxis: you have to return to the station to collect your bags, which anchors your afternoon.
Planning Your Arrival Day
Getting a hotel near Kyoto Station simplifies arrival day considerably, especially for travelers coming from Tokyo on an early Shinkansen. Many hotels on the Kyoto Station side offer luggage storage for guests arriving before check-in time.
