Fushimi Inari Early Morning: Why You Need to Go Bag-Free

The thousand torii gates of Fushimi Inari Taisha are one of Japan's most photographed landmarks. They are also, during daylight hours from late morning onward, one of its most crowded. The gates that look otherworldly in photographs are frequently lined with visitors moving in tight single file, with no way to stop and absorb what you are walking through.

The solution is almost universally agreed upon by experienced Kyoto travelers: arrive early. Before 7:00 AM, ideally before 6:30. And if you arrive early, arrive without luggage.

Why Early Morning Changes Everything

Fushimi Inari is open 24 hours. In the first hours after dawn, the lower trails have perhaps a dozen visitors. The orange gates glow differently in early morning light than they do at noon. You can stop in the middle of a tunnel of torii and listen to silence interrupted only by the occasional crow.

By 9:00 AM the first tour groups arrive. By 10:00 AM the main path is fully crowded. By midday, walking through the gates feels more like a queue than a mountain hike.

Why You Should Go Bag-Free

The full trail to the summit of Mount Inari and back takes two to three hours. The path climbs through forested mountain terrain, with stone steps that become increasingly steep in the upper sections. Doing this with a rolling suitcase is not possible. Doing it with a heavy backpack is unpleasant enough that most people turn back before the upper gates.

Arriving completely bag-free, after arranging luggage delivery for the same day, changes the experience entirely. You can walk as far as you want, stop wherever you want, and take as long as you want.

How to Arrange It

KOMATSU offers same-day luggage delivery in Kyoto. Arrange for your bags to be collected from your previous night's accommodation and delivered to your next hotel while you spend the morning at Fushimi Inari. By the time you finish the mountain trail and make your way to your new hotel for check-in, your luggage is already there.

Delivery starts from 900 yen per bag. Pickups begin at 6:00 AM, so early-morning arrangements are possible.

Getting to Fushimi Inari

Fushimi Inari Taisha is served by Inari Station on the JR Nara Line. It is one stop from Kyoto Station, about 5 minutes by train. The station is directly adjacent to the shrine's main entrance. If you are staying near Kyoto Station, you can be at the base of the torii gates before most visitors have left their hotels.

A Simple Plan for the Morning

Book the night before, hand over your bags at 6:00 AM, and take the JR Nara Line to Inari Station. Plan on at least two hours for the full trail, then head to your hotel with nothing to carry.

Where to Stay

Staying near Kyoto Station makes an early Fushimi Inari visit logistically simple. Several hotels within walking distance offer early check-in or luggage storage for guests arriving before check-in time.
