Checkout Day in Kyoto: How to Enjoy Your Last Day Before an Evening Train

2 min read

Most hotels in Kyoto ask you to check out in the morning, but many trains and flights leave in the afternoon or evening. That gap can easily turn your last day into a day of dragging a suitcase around. Here is how our luggage delivery team would plan it.

First, decide what to do with your luggage

Ask your hotel. Many hotels will keep your bags at the front desk after checkout, so ask the day before. Airbnbs and self check-in guesthouses usually cannot do this, because there is no staff on site.

Coin lockers at Kyoto Station. They are convenient, but large lockers go fast, and in cherry blossom and autumn leaf season they can be full by late morning. Don't make them your only plan.

Luggage delivery. If you'd rather not think about lockers at all, a delivery service can move your bags for you so you can sightsee hands-free. Tell us your plans and we will tell you what works for your route.

Easy last-day ideas near Kyoto Station

Fushimi Inari Taisha. Just a few minutes from Kyoto Station on the JR Nara Line to Inari Station. Go in the morning for fewer crowds, and walk only as far up the mountain as your time allows.

To-ji Temple. Home to Japan's tallest wooden pagoda and within walking distance of the station's south side. A calm option if you want to stay close.

Sanjusangendo. The long hall with 1,001 statues of Kannon is a short ride from the station and takes about an hour to enjoy.

Nishiki Market. The best place for food souvenirs. Shopping on your last day means you don't carry snacks around for the whole trip.

Tips for a stress-free departure

Kyoto Station is big and busy. Give yourself extra time to get to the right platform, especially for the Shinkansen. If you want to eat on the train, the station has plenty of bento shops, so you can pick up lunch or dinner on the way.

Your last day in Kyoto should feel like part of the trip, not just waiting. Plan your luggage first, and the rest of the day is yours. Have questions about your route? Contact us through our booking page and we will be happy to help.
