Arashiyama Bamboo Grove With No Luggage: The Best Experience
Updated: Oct 22
Arashiyama sits at the western edge of Kyoto, where the city meets forested mountains and the Oi River bends between wooded slopes. The bamboo grove that cuts through the heart of the district is one of the most atmospheric places in Japan. It is a narrow path flanked by towering bamboo stalks that creak and sway overhead.
It is also one of the places where traveling with luggage is most obviously wrong. Here is why the bamboo grove, and Arashiyama as a whole, is best experienced bag-free.
The Bamboo Grove Itself
The main bamboo path at Arashiyama is short. Perhaps 500 meters from the Tenryuji temple entrance north to Okochi Sanso garden. But it connects to a network of quieter paths that most visitors miss because they came with a time constraint or a suitcase.
Without luggage, you can walk north past the main grove, follow the path up into the hillside gardens, and find the less-visited corners of Arashiyama that feel genuinely undiscovered. With a suitcase, you make it to the main path and turn back.
Tenryuji Garden
Adjacent to the bamboo grove is Tenryuji, one of Kyoto's finest Zen gardens. The moss, raked gravel, and borrowed scenery of the surrounding mountains are best appreciated slowly, sitting on the veranda. That is harder to do when you are managing bags.
The River and the Boat Ride
Arashiyama's Oi River offers traditional wooden boat rides through a gorge section called Hozugawa. Boarding a small boat with a rolling suitcase is neither comfortable nor practical. Arriving by a short train or taxi from your luggage-free morning is a different experience entirely.
Getting to Arashiyama
Arashiyama is served by the JR Sagano Line (Saga-Arashiyama Station), the Hankyu Arashiyama Line, and the Keifuku Arashima Tram. From central Kyoto, the journey is 15 to 25 minutes depending on your starting point.
Arranging Luggage Delivery for Arashiyama Day
If you are moving accommodations on the day you visit Arashiyama, arrange for KOMATSU to collect your bags from your current hotel in the morning. By the time you return to central Kyoto or reach your next accommodation in the late afternoon, your luggage is already there.
Same-day delivery starts from 900 yen per bag. Pickups begin at 6:00 AM.
Make a Half-Day of It
Arashiyama rewards a slow pace. Plan on three to four hours, and leave room for tea, a riverside walk and a stop at a small shop. Without bags, you can stay as long as the light is good.
Where to Stay in Kyoto
Arashiyama has a small selection of ryokan and boutique hotels for travelers who want to stay in the district itself. Most visitors access it as a day trip from central Kyoto. Either way, having your bags delivered directly to your accommodation saves you from carrying them on the journey.
