A Hands-Free Day in Kyoto: The Ultimate Itinerary
Updated: 2 days ago
One of the best ways to experience Kyoto is to spend an entire day moving through it without a bag on your back or a suitcase at your side. This itinerary is built around that idea: arrange your luggage delivery in the morning, then follow the city wherever it takes you.
This is not a checklist of famous sites. It is a way of moving through Kyoto that only becomes possible when you are not managing your bags.
Morning: Fushimi Inari Before the Crowds
Start early. Take the JR Nara Line from Kyoto Station to Inari Station. It is one stop and five minutes. Arrive at Fushimi Inari Taisha by 6:30 AM. The lower torii tunnels are quiet at this hour, the light is different from midday, and the mountain trail is yours to walk at whatever pace you choose.
Arrange your luggage delivery before you leave your hotel. KOMATSU picks up from 6:00 AM. By the time you are climbing through the gates, your bags are already on their way to your next accommodation.
Mid-Morning: Fushimi to Gion by Bus
Come back down the mountain by 9:00 AM, before the first tour groups arrive. Take bus 207 north toward Gion. Walk the preserved machiya lanes of Higashiyama, starting at Kiyomizudera and working your way north through Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka.
Without a bag, you can browse the ceramics and textile shops along the way, duck into any courtyard that looks interesting, and stop for green tea at a teahouse without worrying about where to park your luggage.
Lunch: Nishiki Market
Continue north to Nishiki Market, Kyoto's covered food market running parallel to Shijo Street. This is one of those places where the quality of the experience scales directly with how light you are traveling. Nishiki's lanes are narrow, the stalls are close together, and the interesting things to eat require both hands. Go hands-free.
Afternoon: Philosopher's Path and Nanzenji
Take a taxi or bus east to the Philosopher's Path. Walk north along the canal, stopping at whichever temples call to you, such as Eikan-do, Nanzenji or Ginkakuji. This stretch of Kyoto is best walked slowly, and slowly only works without a bag.
Evening: Check In, Bags Already There
By the time you reach your hotel in the late afternoon, your luggage delivered by KOMATSU is waiting at the front desk. You did not carry it. You did not think about it. You just walked Kyoto.
Tips for the Day
Wear comfortable shoes and carry a small day bag with water, a phone charger and your valuables. Keep your passport and cash with you, since KOMATSU does not accept those. Check the weather the night before and bring a light layer.
Book Accommodation and Delivery
The itinerary above works from any base in the city, but staying near Kyoto Station makes the early-morning Fushimi start straightforward.
